What Is the UHDS-402A?

The OREI UHDS-402A is a 4x2 HDMI 2.0 matrix switcher with audio extraction. It allows you to connect up to four HDMI source devices and route them to two HDMI displays.

The UHDS-402A can send any of the four HDMI inputs to Output A or Output B. Both outputs can show the same source, or each output can show a different source.

The UHDS-402A supports HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2 / 1.4, DVI 1.0, with a video bandwidth of 18Gbps. It supports video resolutions up to 4K@60Hz YCbCr 4:4:4, 4K@30Hz, all HDMI 3D TV formats, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, ARC, 4K to 1080p downscaling, EDID management, and audio extraction through Optical and 3.5mm L/R outputs. 

The UHDS-402A is useful for home theater, classrooms, conference rooms, retail displays, professional AV setups, and any setup where multiple HDMI sources need to be shared between two displays.

 

IMPORTANT — UHDS-402A Is a Matrix, Not Just a Splitter

The UHDS-402A is a 4-input, 2-output HDMI matrix.

This means any HDMI input can be routed to either HDMI output.

For example:

  • Output A can show Input 1 
  • Output B can show Input 3 

Both outputs can also show the same input if needed.

This is different from a basic HDMI splitter, which only duplicates one HDMI source to multiple displays.

 

IMPORTANT — UHDS-402A Supports 4K@60Hz, Not 8K or 4K@120Hz

The UHDS-402A supports video resolutions up to 4K@60Hz.

It does not support 8K or 4K@120Hz.

For 8K or 4K@120Hz setups, use an HDMI 2.1 matrix or switch that supports the required bandwidth.

 

IMPORTANT — Audio Extraction Can Follow Output A or Output B

The UHDS-402A can extract audio from either Output A or Output B.

Press the AUDIO button to select whether the extracted audio comes from the source currently routed to Output A or Output B.

The selected audio can be sent to:

  • Optical output 
  • 3.5mm analog L/R output 

This is useful when you want video to go to the TV while audio goes separately to an amplifier, soundbar, speaker system, or stereo audio device.

 

IMPORTANT — 3.5mm L/R Output Supports PCM 2.0 Only

The 3.5mm analog L/R output supports PCM 2.0CH only.

If you are using the 3.5mm output and there is no audio, set the source device to PCM, LPCM, or Stereo audio.

The 3.5mm output does not support Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Atmos, or other surround formats.

 

IMPORTANT — Optical Output Has Audio Format Limits

The Optical output supports PCM 2.0, Dolby Digital / Plus, and DTS.

If you are using the Optical output, make sure the connected soundbar, AVR, amplifier, or audio system supports the audio format being sent.

If there is no audio from Optical, try setting the source device to PCM stereo or Dolby Digital depending on what your audio system supports.

 

IMPORTANT — ARC Changes How Audio Output Works

The UHDS-402A supports ARC, which stands for Audio Return Channel.

When ARC is turned off, the Optical and L/R outputs extract audio from the HDMI source routed to Output A or Output B.

When ARC is turned on, the Optical output can receive returned audio from the display connected to Output A or Output B.

Important: When ARC is turned on, the analog L/R audio port is muted.

 

IMPORTANT — 4K to 1080p Downscaling Is Supported

The UHDS-402A supports 4K to 1080p downscaling on Output A and Output B.

This is useful when the HDMI source is outputting 4K, but one connected TV or projector only supports 1080p.

For example, if Output A is connected to a 4K TV and Output B is connected to a 1080p TV, the downscale function can help the 1080p display receive a compatible signal.

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Connect the included 12V/1A locking power adapter to the DC 12V port on the UHDS-402A. 
  2. Connect your HDMI source devices to HDMI Input 1, Input 2, Input 3, and Input 4. 
    Examples include a DVD player, Blu-ray player, PS4, PC, streaming device, cable box, or media player. 
  3. Connect HDMI OUT A to your first TV, monitor, or projector. 
  4. Connect HDMI OUT B to your second TV, monitor, or projector. 
  5. If using audio extraction, connect your audio device to the Optical output or 3.5mm L/R output. 
  6. Turn on the source devices, displays, audio system, and UHDS-402A. 
  7. Use the OUT A and OUT B buttons on the front panel or the included IR remote to select which input appears on each output. 
  8. Use the AUDIO button to choose whether extracted audio follows Output A or Output B. 
  9. If one display only supports 1080p, use the 4K→1080p button to enable downscaling for that output. 
  10. If using ARC, enable ARC on the TV, then press the ARC button on the UHDS-402A. 

 

HDMI Cable Requirement — Critical

For best performance, use high-quality HDMI cables.

The UHDS-402A supports 4K@60Hz YCbCr 4:4:4 with 18Gbps bandwidth. The manual notes that for 4K@60Hz YCbCr 4:4:4, HDMI input cable length can reach up to 8m and HDMI output cable length can reach up to 3m.

The use of Premium High Speed HDMI cables is recommended.

Poor-quality or longer HDMI cables may cause:

  • No video output 
  • Flickering 
  • Black screen 
  • Audio dropouts 
  • HDR or Dolby Vision issues 
  • HDCP handshake problems 
  • 4K@60Hz not displaying correctly 

 

Understanding Matrix Routing

The UHDS-402A allows each output to select from any of the four HDMI inputs.

This means both displays can show the same source, or each display can show a different source.

Understanding Auto Switching

The UHDS-402A supports Auto mode for Output A and Output B.

To enable Auto mode for Output A, press and hold the OUT A button for about 3 seconds.

To enable Auto mode for Output B, press and hold the OUT B button for about 3 seconds.

When Auto mode is enabled, the blue AUTO LED turns on.

Auto mode detects connected HDMI input sources. If one or more HDMI inputs are connected, the selected output will switch to the last connected input source.

Auto switching behavior can depend on how the connected HDMI source devices behave. Some streaming devices, game consoles, or set-top boxes may stay active in standby mode, which can affect automatic switching.

 

Understanding Audio Extraction

The UHDS-402A can extract audio from the HDMI source routed to Output A or Output B.

Use the AUDIO button to select whether the extracted audio follows Output A or Output B.

 

Understanding ARC Mode

ARC allows audio from a compatible TV to return through HDMI and output through the UHDS-402A’s Optical output.

When ARC is turned on:

  • Press Audio A to return audio from the Output A display to Optical 
  • Press Audio B to return audio from the Output B display to Optical 
  • The analog L/R audio output is muted 

When ARC is turned off:

  • Press Audio A or Audio B to extract audio from the HDMI source routed to that output 
  • Audio is available through Optical and analog L/R output 

For ARC to work, the connected TV must support ARC and ARC must be enabled in the TV settings.

 

Understanding 4K to 1080p Downscaling

The 4K→1080p function allows Output A or Output B to downscale a 4K input signal to 1080p.

This is useful when:

  • The source is outputting 4K 
  • One display supports only 1080p 
  • You want to keep using a mixed 4K and 1080p display setup 

Downscaling does not upgrade a 1080p source to 4K. It only reduces a 4K signal to 1080p for compatibility with a lower-resolution display.

 

Understanding EDID Modes

The UHDS-402A includes three EDID modes: AUTO, COPY, and STD.

COPY Copies Output A display EDID to the source devices for Output A and Output B
STD Sets Output A and Output B output default to 1080p

Use AUTO for most normal setups.

Use COPY when you want both outputs to follow the capability of the display connected to Output A.

Use STD when troubleshooting compatibility issues or when using older 1080p displays.

 

Understanding the IR Remote

The included IR remote can control routing, Auto mode, downscaling, ARC, and audio selection.
