Introduction
This guide helps you troubleshoot common issues with the OREI UHD48-EX230-K 4K 4x4 HDMI Matrix Extender over Cat 6/7. The system routes 4 HDMI sources to 4 displays using CAT6 Receivers and supports 4K at 60 Hz, HDCP 2.2, front panel control, IR, RS-232, and web GUI management.
Issue description
Use this guide when the matrix extender does not pass video or audio correctly, when control functions do not respond as expected, or when the unit shows status or power behavior that suggests a fault. The steps below are organized to help you isolate cable, source, display, receiver, configuration, and hardware-related problems.
Signs
- No video on one or more CAT outputs or HDMI outputs
- No audio on a specific output
- Unit remains in standby or does not power on normally
- Power LED blinks red
- Web GUI cannot be reached or shows incorrect status
- CEC control does not work through CAT receivers
- Fan noise is louder than expected
- A receiver does not power up or pass signal
- 4K video does not pass through correctly
Basic troubleshooting steps
- Confirm the source device is powered on and outputting a valid HDMI signal.
- Verify all HDMI and Cat cables are firmly connected at the source, matrix, receiver, and display ends.
- Test with a known-good HDMI cable and a known-good Cat 6 or Cat 7 cable.
- Check that the display is set to the correct input source.
- Power cycle the matrix, receivers, source devices, and displays.
- Open the web GUI to confirm routing, EDID, and other settings.
- Make sure the installation uses Cat 6 or Cat 7 cabling and that terminations follow the T568B standard.
- If a specific port consistently fails after swapping cables and devices, note the port number for support.
Advanced troubleshooting steps
1. No video on CAT outputs
The CAT outputs mirror the HDMI OUT signal path, so a problem on the CAT side can come from the matrix output, receiver power, cabling, or termination. The UHD48-EX230-K requires Cat 6 or Cat 7 cabling, and 4K performance is limited to a maximum distance of 230 ft.
- Check the status of the Green and Yellow LEDs on the CAT ports
- Use Cat 6 or Cat 7 cable only; Cat 5e is not supported for reliable 4K transmission.
- Swap the receiver with another output to determine whether the issue follows the receiver or the port.
- Try changing the CAT cables.
- Try a lower resolution from the media source.
- Try a different media source.
- Check if the local HDMI output on the Matrix works.
- Check the status of the Green and Yellow LEDs on the CAT port of the Receiver.
IMPORTANT: If one receiver works on another output but fails on the original output, the issue may be tied to the matrix port. If the same receiver fails on multiple outputs, replace the receiver or cable as needed.
2. No video on HDMI outputs
If the HDMI outputs are blank, isolate the source, cable, routing, and port behavior. A failed input or incorrect routing setting can prevent video from appearing on the display.
- Verify the source device is powered on and actively sending video.
- Try changing the HDMI cables.
- Test the source on another input to confirm the source is working.
- Check the routing table in the web GUI to confirm the correct source is assigned to the output.
- Power cycle the source, matrix, and display.
- Try changing the EDID settings from the web GUI.
- Check if the CAT output next to the HDMI output is working fine.
3. No audio on a specific output
Audio problems on one output are often related to EDID settings, display audio capability, or a specific output fault. The web GUI allows you to set per-input EDID values that affect how the source negotiates audio and video.
- Check the per-input EDID setting in the web GUI.
- Match the EDID to the connected display's audio capability.
- Power cycle the source and matrix after changing EDID so the new setting is negotiated.
- Test the same output with a different source to confirm whether the issue is output-specific.
- If a specific output has no audio across all inputs, the output may have a hardware defect.
- Confirm if the audio issue also occurs on the local HDMI output.
4. Unit stuck in standby
If the matrix remains in standby, the unit may need a manual wake command or a full power reset. In some cases, control commands sent through RS-232 or the web GUI can restore normal operation.
- Press the front panel power button.
- Send a power-on command through RS-232 or the web GUI.
- Unplug the unit for 30 seconds, then reconnect power.
- If the unit still does not respond, contact support before attempting a firmware update.
IMPORTANT: Do not attempt a firmware update on an unresponsive unit until support has confirmed the next step.
5. Power LED blinking red
A blinking red power LED can indicate a fault on one of the CAT outputs or a connected receiver or a fault in the Transmitter unit.
- Disconnect all Receivers from the matrix.
- Reconnect one Receiver at a time.
- Watch for the port that triggers the red blinking LED.
- If a specific port triggers the fault consistently, treat it as a hardware defect and contact support.
- The issue may also be power related in which case, try connecting the power adapter to a different wall outlet.
6. Web GUI not accessible
If you cannot reach the web GUI, the issue is often related to network IP configuration. A factory reset can restore the default IP settings.
- Confirm your computer is on the same subnet as the matrix.
- Use Chrome or another modern browser.
- Perform a factory reset by sending the s reset! command through RS-232.

7. CEC not working through CAT outputs
CEC control on the UHD48-EX230-K is supported on HDMI outputs only and is not passed through CAT receivers.
Consider the UHD44-EXB230R-K, UHD88-EXB230R-K, UHD88-EXB300-K, and UHD88-EXB400R-K if you need CEC over CAT.
8. Noisy fan
Fan operation is normal, but excessive noise can indicate poor ventilation or a mechanical issue.
- Make sure the unit has adequate ventilation and is kept in a cool environment.
- If you hear grinding or scraping, contact support ASAP.
9. Receiver not working
When a receiver does not power up or pass signal, isolate the receiver, cable, and PoC status before replacing components. Replacement receivers are available for purchase separately, if needed.
- Swap the Cat cable with a known-good cable.
- Swap the receiver with another output to confirm whether the receiver is faulty.
- Check the status of the Green and Yellow LEDs on the CAT port on the Receiver.
- Swap the Receiver with another Receiver unit to isolate the fault to the specific unit.
10. 4K not passing through
If 4K video does not pass correctly, the issue is often related to cable quality, EDID negotiation, or cabling limitations. High Speed HDMI cabling is required for reliable 4K signal handling.
- Use a High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K@60Hz.
- Check the EDID setting in the web GUI and confirm it matches the display's native resolution.
- Replace Cat 5e with Cat 6 or Cat 7 for 4K installations.
11. Inaccurate web GUI connection status
In some cases, the web GUI may show an incorrect connection status even when video is passing correctly. This is a known firmware behavior on some units.
- Verify actual video output at the display before assuming the connection has failed.
- Contact support for a firmware update if the status remains inaccurate.
