Introduction
This guide helps you troubleshoot common issues with the OREI UHD816-EX230-K 4K 8x16 HDMI Matrix Extender over Cat 6/7. The system distributes up to 8 HDMI sources to 16 displays using the 8 included Receivers and the mirrored HDMI loop outputs and supports 4K@60Hz, HDCP 2.2, front panel control, IR remote control, RS-232, and web GUI management over IP. It is commonly used in commercial AV environments such as restaurants, sports bars, golf simulators, cafeterias, and multi-room systems.
Issue description
This troubleshooting guide covers the most common video, audio, control, network, and receiver-related issues that may occur when using the UHD816-EX230-K matrix extender. Follow the steps below to isolate whether the problem is caused by the source, HDMI cabling, Cat 6/7 run, receiver, display, routing configuration, or a hardware fault.
Signs
- No video on one or more CAT outputs
- No video on one or more HDMI outputs
- Intermittent signal dropouts or flickering
- Audio missing on a specific output
- Unit is stuck in standby or does not respond to controls
- Web GUI cannot be reached over the network
- CEC commands do not work through CAT outputs
- 4K video is not passing correctly
- One receiver or one output appears to have failed
Basic troubleshooting steps
- Confirm the source device is powered on and outputting a valid signal.
- Verify the correct input is selected and routed to the intended output.
- Check that all HDMI cables are firmly connected and in good condition.
- Try changing the HDMI and CAT cables.
- Try using a different media source.
- Use Cat 6 or Cat 7 cable for all runs. Cat 5e is not supported for reliable 4K performance.
- Confirm all RJ45 terminations use the T568B wiring standard.
- Make sure the cable run does not exceed 230 ft for 4K signals.
- Power cycle the matrix, receivers, source devices, and displays.
- Test with a known-good cable, receiver, source, and display where possible.
Advanced troubleshooting steps
1. No video on CAT outputs
The CAT output mirrors the HDMI output path through the Receiver. If there is no video on the CAT side, begin by confirming receiver power and cable integrity, then verify the routing and source path.
- Check the status of the Green and Yellow LEDs on the CAT ports
- Use Cat 6 or Cat 7 cable only; Cat 5e is not supported for reliable 4K transmission.
- Swap the receiver with another output to determine whether the issue follows the receiver or the port.
- Try changing the CAT cables.
- Try a lower resolution from the media source.
- Try a different media source.
- Check if the local HDMI output on the Matrix works.
- Check the status of the Green and Yellow LEDs on the CAT port of the Receiver.
IMPORTANT: If one receiver works on another output but fails on the original output, the issue may be tied to the matrix port. If the same receiver fails on multiple outputs, replace the receiver or cable as needed.
2. No video on HDMI outputs
If the HDMI outputs are blank, isolate the source, cable, routing, and port behavior. A failed input or incorrect routing setting can prevent video from appearing on the display.
- Verify the source device is powered on and actively sending video.
- Try changing the HDMI cables.
- Test the source on another input to confirm the source is working.
- Check the routing table in the web GUI to confirm the correct source is assigned to the output.
- Power cycle the source, matrix, and display.
- Try changing the EDID settings from the web GUI.
- Check if the CAT output next to the HDMI output is working fine.
3. Intermittent signal dropouts on CAT outputs
Dropouts are common in commercial installations when cable quality, termination, or run length is marginal. Focus on the local run and receiver first.
- Reseat the Cat cable at both the matrix and receiver ends.
- Try a different receiver to see whether the issue follows the receiver or stays with the cable run.
- Try using a different input as the source.
- Change the EDID from the web GUI.
- Swap the receiver with a known working one to see if the issue stays with the specific CAT output on the Matrix.
- If only one output drops while others remain stable, the issue is likely local to that run or receiver.
4. No audio on a specific output
Audio issues on only one output are often related to EDID settings or the audio capability of the connected display or device.
- Check the per-input EDID setting in the web GUI.
- Match the EDID setting to the audio capability of the display.
- Power cycle the source and matrix after changing EDID so the new setting is negotiated.
- Test the same output with a different source to confirm whether the issue is output-specific.
- If a specific output has no audio across all inputs, the output may have a hardware defect.
- Confirm if the audio issue also occurs on the local HDMI output.
5. Unit stuck in standby or not responding
If the matrix does not respond to normal control methods, try local, remote, and network commands before assuming a hardware failure.
- Press the front panel power button.
- Send a power-on command through RS-232 or the web GUI.
- Unplug the unit for 30 seconds, then reconnect power.
- If the unit still does not respond, contact support before attempting a firmware update.
IMPORTANT: Do not attempt a firmware update on an unresponsive unit without support confirmation.
6. Web GUI not accessible
Web access problems are usually caused by network mismatch, browser issues, or a changed IP configuration.
- Confirm your computer is on the same subnet as the matrix.
- Use Chrome or another modern browser.
- Perform a factory reset using the front panel button. Press and hold both the Output Up and Down (indicated by arrows) buttons at the same time for 10 seconds, the display on the matrix would say "FC" and it would be restored to factory settings.
- Perform a factory reset by sending the s reset! command through RS-232.

7. CEC not working through CAT outputs
CEC control on the UHD816-EX230-K is supported on HDMI outputs only and is not passed through CAT receivers.
Consider the UHD44-EXB230R-K, UHD88-EXB230R-K, UHD88-EXB300-K, and UHD88-EXB400R-K if you need CEC over CAT.
8. Firmware update
Firmware updates can improve compatibility and stability, but the correct file and process must be confirmed before updating.
- Contact support to obtain the correct firmware file and update procedure.
- After the update, power cycle all devices in the system.
- Test video, audio, and control functions after restart.
IMPORTANT: Do not update firmware without first contacting OREI support to confirm the correct file and process.
9. Receiver not working
When a receiver does not power up or pass signal, isolate the receiver, cable, and PoC status before replacing components. Replacement receivers are available for purchase separately, if needed.
- Swap the Cat cable with a known-good cable.
- Swap the receiver with another output to confirm whether the receiver is faulty.
- Check the status of the Green and Yellow LEDs on the CAT port on the Receiver.
- Swap the Receiver with another Receiver unit to isolate the fault to the specific unit.
10. 4K not passing through
If 4K video does not pass correctly, the issue is often related to cable quality, EDID negotiation, or cabling limitations. High Speed HDMI cabling is required for reliable 4K signal handling.
- Use a High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K@60Hz.
- Check the EDID setting in the web GUI and confirm it matches the display's native resolution.
- Replace Cat 5e with Cat 6 or Cat 7 for 4K installations.
