What Is the HDS-102?

The OREI HDS-102 is a 1x2 HDMI 1.4 splitter. It distributes one HDMI source to two HDMI displays simultaneously, showing the same video and audio on both screens.

The HDS-102 supports resolutions up to 4K@30Hz, 1080p@120Hz, and 1080p 3D@60Hz. It also supports HDCP 1.4, 3D video, deep color, multichannel HDMI audio, and Copy or Auto EDID modes.

It is useful for TVs, monitors, projectors, conference rooms, classrooms, retail displays, showrooms, information displays, and home entertainment systems.

The HDS-102 mirrors one HDMI source. It cannot create two independent computer displays or send different sources to each output.

The source, HDMI cables, and displays must support the selected resolution and refresh rate.

 

IMPORTANT — Both Displays Show the Same Content

The HDS-102 sends the same HDMI input signal to both HDMI outputs.

When connected to a computer, the splitter mirrors the computer screen. It does not create an extended desktop.

 

IMPORTANT — EDID Copy and Auto Modes

The front-panel EDID switch provides two modes.

EDID Mode Function
COPY Copies the EDID from HDMI Output 2
AUTO Compares the EDID from HDMI Outputs 1 and 2

EDID tells the source which video and audio formats the connected equipment supports.

 

Understanding COPY EDID Mode

On the HDS-102, COPY mode copies the EDID from the display connected to HDMI Output 2.

Use COPY mode when:

  1. Output 2 is connected to the primary display
  2. The source should follow the capabilities of Display 2
  3. Both displays support the same video and audio formats
  4. A fixed reference display is preferred 
     
    If Display 1 has lower capabilities than Display 2, Display 1 may not show video or play audio correctly.

 

Understanding AUTO EDID Mode

AUTO mode compares the EDID information from the displays connected to Outputs 1 and 2.

Use AUTO mode when:

  1. Two different display models are connected
  2. The displays have different capabilities
  3. One display does not work correctly in COPY mode
  4. A shared compatible format is needed 
     
    If problems continue, manually set the source to a video and audio format supported by both displays.

 

IMPORTANT — Downscaling Is Not Listed

The manual does not list 4K-to-1080p downscaling.

If the source outputs 4K@30Hz, both connected displays should support that signal. For one 4K display and one 1080p display, set the source to a common resolution such as 1080p.

 

Deep Color Support

The HDS-102 supports:

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Turn off the HDMI source and displays.
  2. Connect the HDMI source to the HDS-102 HDMI INPUT.
  3. Connect the first display to HDMI OUTPUT 1.
  4. Connect the primary or reference display to HDMI OUTPUT 2 if COPY mode will be used.
  5. Set the EDID switch to COPY or AUTO.
  6. Connect the included DC 5V/1A power adapter.
  7. Turn on the displays and HDMI source.
  8. Confirm that the red Input LED illuminates.
  9. Confirm that the Output 1 and Output 2 LEDs illuminate for the connected displays.
  10. Test video and HDMI audio on both displays.

    For troubleshooting, connect the source directly to each display using the same HDMI cable.

Understanding the Application Diagram

The application diagram shows HDMI sources such as an Xbox 360 or DVD player connected through a splitter to TVs and monitors.

The primary function is:

  1. Connect one HDMI source to the splitter.

  3. Show the same source on both displays.
