Introduction
This guide helps you troubleshoot common setup, control, audio, and video issues with the OREI UHDS-404VW 4K 4x4 Seamless HDMI Matrix Video Wall Controller. The UHDS-404VW supports four HDMI inputs, four HDMI outputs, video wall layouts, 180-degree rotation, RS-232 control, web GUI access over LAN, IR remote control, among other features.
Issue description
This guide covers troubleshooting for the following common issues: web GUI access problems, no video on one or more displays, incorrect video wall layout behavior, remote control issues, RS-232 communication failures, and complete unit unresponsiveness.
Signs
- Cannot access the web GUI from a connected computer
- One or more displays show no signal or a blank screen
- Video wall layout does not match the physical display arrangement
- IR remote does not respond
- RS-232 control commands do not work
- The unit does not respond to front panel, remote, RS-232, or web GUI control
Basic troubleshooting steps
- Confirm the UHDS-404VW and all connected devices are powered on.
- Verify HDMI cables are securely connected.
- Try changing the HDMI cables.
- Check that each source device is outputting a valid HDMI signal.
- Verify the correct input is routed to the correct output.
- Power cycle the matrix switch, source devices, and displays.
- Use the front panel buttons, IR remote, RS-232, or web GUI to test control methods.
Advanced troubleshooting steps
1. Web GUI not accessible or cannot connect to configure the unit
If you cannot reach the web GUI, the issue is often related to network IP configuration. A factory reset can restore the default IP settings.
- Confirm your computer is on the same subnet as the matrix.
- Use Chrome or another modern browser.
- Perform a factory reset by sending the s reset! command through RS-232.
For more details on how to connect to the web GUI on OREI devices, refer to this article. (Article coming soon)
2. No video output on one or more displays
If one or more screens are blank, the issue is often related to source signal, cabling, or routing.
- Confirm the routing in the web GUI or via the remote — verify the correct input is assigned to the affected output(s).
- Power cycle the UHDS-404VW and connected devices.
- Try a lower resolution from the media source.
- Confirm if the issue happens with a different media source routed to the same output(s).
- Try changing the HDMI cables.
- If the issue happens on a specific display, try moving it to a different output port and see if the issue follows the display or the specific output port.
- Change EDID settings from the web GUI.
3. Video wall layout not displaying correctly or video cutting off between the screens
The UHDS-404VW supports 2x2, 1x4, 1x2, and 4x1 video wall layouts among some others. If the image is split incorrectly or the wrong section appears on each screen, review the layout and screen assignment settings in the web GUI.
- Confirm the layout mode is set correctly in the web GUI or via the remote.
- Verify all four displays are connected and powered on.
- Adjust bezel correction settings in the web GUI if you're seeing the video cut off.
- Verify display position assignments match the physical layout.
- Reboot the UHDS-404VW or perform a factory reset through the web GUI or through RS-232.
4. Remote control not working
If the IR remote does not respond, start with the simplest checks first.
- Confirm the remote has working batteries installed. Try a new set of batteries if possible.
- Point the remote directly at the IR receiver on the front panel of the UHDS-404VW.
- You can also point the remote to your phones camera and press the buttons to see if a red beam of light can be picked up by the phone. If it does, the remote might be in good condition.
- Make sure to remove the small plastic tab inserted in the remote before using it.
5. RS-232 control not working
RS-232 issues are usually caused by incorrect cabling, wrong serial port settings, or command format errors.
- Verify the RS-232 cable is connected to the correct port on the UHDS-404VW.
- Make sure to use these settings:
- Baud rate 115200, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity.
- Confirm the commands are being sent in the correct format. Adding an exclamation mark at the end of the command is required. Example: r status!
- Try a different serial command tool if PuTTy doesn't work.
If the included RS-232 cable does not work, you can purchase a replacement cable at this link.
6. Unit not responding or not working at all
If the UHDS-404VW does not respond to any control method, perform a full power reset and then test the connected equipment individually to isolate the cause.
- Unplug the unit from power, wait 30 seconds, and reconnect it.
- Test source devices directly to a display to confirm the sources and cables are working.
- If the unit remains unresponsive to the front panel commands or the remote, perform a factory reset through RS-232 or web GUI.
- Contact support if the unit remains unresponsive after a factory reset.
